Last week I photographed the beginning of a relocation project by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of Columbian white-tail deer from the Julia Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge near Cathlamet to the Ridgefield Refuge.
Above, an FWS agent checks on a captured deer before transporting to its new home.
The reason for the move is a potential breach in the dike by the Columbia River, which has already closed the Steamboat Slough Road located on top of the dike that loops the exterior of the refuge.
The deer are being captured by large drop nets that fall on them when the they take the food bait.
You can read all about this in the paper this week.
