Another night, another raucous playoff game

The postseason basketball continued for me Saturday night as I traveled to Chehalis for a second round District IV game between Ilwaco and Winlock. And as I mentioned in my last post, the game was once again a rough and tumble affair. By the end, Ilwaco's center had fouled out by the fourth quarter and their shooting guard and head coach were tossed from the game by way of technical fouls. Even the crowds were rowdy.
Ilwaco lost the game 61-46, despite some late threes and free throws, as they were trailing by more early on in the fourth.
Ilwaco still has a chance to make the state tournament, but only if they win their next two games. They will play next on Thursday, Feb. 21 in a 6:30 p.m. game at Centralia. If they win that game they will play in the third place game on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Kelso. A win in that game sends them to the state tournament. A loss in either two would send them home.

Here's some of what I got from an interesting game:

It was a tough way to end, especially with the Cardinal fans chanting "On to state" as the players started to celebrate. But the Fishermen still have time left to accomplish what they set out for this year.

Kaino never received a technical--only one of many mistakes the photojournalist made--as he has no clue about human nature or sports. Why is he working there?

To anonymous,
To be clear, I am not a sports writer, that's why I do not write sports stories. I am a photographer and my job at a game like this is to find the pictures that illustrate how things went down. In writing my blog, which as most folks know is not so much a record of set-in-stone facts, as I do not keep stats or the like while shooting. It is a record of recollections, and that is how I approach it, and what I wrote is how I saw things go down. I had no way of cross checking information from the game Sunday, as there were no other game stories available at that time.

Matt Kaino was ejected and the other team shot two technical free throws as well as two "normal" free throws following the ejection. I am not sure how that can not be construed as being ejected by way of technical foul. In fact, due to said ejection Kaino will not be playing in the next game, nor will the coach — who was also ejected by way of technical foul — unless the WIAA overturns the ejections due to evidence that shows the calls were made capriciously. If there were other "mistakes" made as you suggest, I'd be happy to address them.

However, in the future if you would like to have a conversation about what you perceive as mistakes on my part, please feel free to e-mail me directly at dmulinix@chinookobserver.com, or call me at work, 642-8181, instead of leaving an anonymous message deriding my work or my job status.
Thanks for reading my blog,
